About the DHS Teen Health Awareness Club

OUR HISTORY

The Teen Health Awareness club was founded by Gaelyn W. at Davis Senior High School in October 2012.

The mission of the club is to increase student awareness on health issues which are relevant to adolescents and young adults; this club allows students to take action on their interests in health care and make a difference by   setting up and collaborating on innovative events in order to successfully educate their peers and staff members.

Activities have evolved over time and have included creating a successful healthcare lecture series with discussion of health topics led by healthcare professionals, hosting peer educational events including the "Healthy Habits Challenge Game" and "Alternative to Soda" Days,

healthy snacks tasting and rating with creation of a healthy recipe book for teens, participation in health promoting events such as fun runs/walks, and working with younger students at the elementary and middle schools in our community to educate them with the goal of influencing them to adopt healthy eating and healthy lifestyle habits.

Newer projects include working with Safe Routes to Schools National Partnership and Kaiser Permanente to start the "Fire Up Your Feet " program at local elementary and junior high schools and working with First 5 Yolo and the California Center for Public Advocacy to support healthy drink alternatives in our community. We also will have more volunteer opportunities coming up with the Street Smarts Program of the City of Davis in the 2014-15 school year.

Our Philosophy

We need to take excellent care of ourselves before we are able to fully use our resources to influence the world.

Our club consists of members who wish to make a difference by educating and helping their peers, their school, and local community.

 The Need for Health Awareness.

Obesity and the rise of Diabetes, Depression and Suicide, Risky Teen Behavior such as drug and alcohol use, distracted driving, and careless sexual practices are just some of the issues that are relevant health issues for teenagers.  This club allows teenagers to address and educate others about these important topics.
