Teen Health Awareness Club
FAQs for the DHS Teen Health Awareness Club
Why join this club?
If you are interested in health care, learning more about healthy habits, teaching peers (and their families!) and younger students about relevant issues, and making a difference in your local school and community, then, this is the club for you!
What is the time commitment?
We know you are busy so we know that you might not be able to make every meeting or every event.
We want you to come to the meetings and events because you are interested.
We encourage everyone to try to make at least 2 meetings or events (i.e 1 event, 1 meeting) a month so you can stay on top of what is going on in the club.
Remember volunteering at our events (“Fire Up Your Feet”, “Alternative to Soda Day” events) count as community service hours for clubs like CSF or NHS! Just record your time and one of the officers can sign your sheet.
If you cannot make some meetings but are interested in what happened, let us know.
We keep detailed agendas and minutes which we can email to you on request.
What is the timeline for events? (The timing may change but will be updated)
Healthcare professional Lecture series: Once a month starting in October
October 2014, April 2015- “Fire Up Your Feet”
February 2015 - Health Habits Challenge Game to be held in early Dec 2014 (After thanksgiving break).
Spring 2015-”Alternative to Soda” events at different schools.
More events will be added.
How can I become an officer ?
Just like colleges (you’ll learn this if you don’t know this already!) we like "demonstrated interest!"
“Demonstrated interest” means you show interest, think of a new event and we will try to implement it, come help out at meetings and events.
The present officers will help vote and pick the next set of officers.
All of the officer positions will be available in the 2015-16 school year since all of the present officers are seniors! By showing you are interested and that you can excel as a leader you have the opportunity of leading the club next year. We will mentor you (show you how to update the website, give you the email and facebook passwords) and have you run a few meetings after elections in early spring so we can help you get started!
Can I propose a new event or invite/suggest a speaker?
Absolutely!
We encourage innovative ideas or suggestions for speakers as well as help with recruiting health care professionals to come give talks to us. If you have someone or something you would like to hear about,
just let us know.
What have I learned from being part of this club?
Gaelyn W. (President): I have learned to network and collaborate with health professionals, members of national groups such as Kaiser Permanente and Safe Routes to School National Partnership, as well as members of local groups such as First 5 Yolo, DJUSD Nutrition department, U.C. Davis, principals, and teachers; together we have made successful events happen that benefit students and our community.
I have been lucky to work with such dedicated club members and a great advisor!
